Keith Jackson blasts Alfredo Morelos for 'malfunctioning' in Rangers draw v Hearts

Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson has taken a swipe at Alfredo Morelos for his lacklustre performance in front of goal on Saturday as Rangers failed to beat Hearts.

Steven Gerrard saw his side concede late on to draw 1-1 with the Edinburgh club at Ibrox after Morelos, 25, missing numerous chances to add to John Lundstram’s first-half strike.

Jackson has mocked Morelos’ performance in front of goal and also suggests Steven Gerrard has issues with having too many options to choose from when he names his squad on matchdays.

“Had Alfredo Morelos remembered to bring his shooting boots and not swap them with a pair of clown shoes instead, then Gerrard would have got exactly what he was looking for – a bit of breathing space at the top of the table,” Jackson wrote on the Daily Record website.

“But, even though the Colombian was malfunctioning quite spectacularly in front of goal, that fact alone does not paper over the raft of conundrums with which Gerrard continues to grapple, as a clutch of contenders now bunch up beneath him.”

Awful performance

Morelos hasn’t had as many performances in front of goal as bad as the one he endured against Hearts on Saturday.

Nothing the Colombia international did was good enough with stats by WhoScored showing that he failed to hit the target with any of his seven efforts at goal.

Morelos is supposed to be the best striker in Scotland. He’s supposed to be a Colombia international. And he’s supposed to have top clubs across Europe courting him ahead of a potential transfer.

That’s not the striker we saw on Saturday as the Gers dropped two points in a game they should have won against second-placed Hearts.

Morelos will enter the final year of his contract at Ibrox once this season is over. He was at his peak value last summer after being a league-winner and impressing in the Europa League yet the Gers didn’t sell him.

From now on, his value is only likely to get lower and lower.

January could be the final chance to make a decent buck off the misfiring Colombian.

In other Rangers news, a Sky Sports pundit claims Gerrard is likely to quit Ibrox.
