Richard Foster baffled by 'strange' Alfredo Morelos in Rangers draw v Hearts

Richard Foster was bemused by Alfredo Morelos’ performance in front of goal on Saturday as Rangers drew 1-1 with Hearts at Ibrox.

John Lundstram was the Gers’ only goalscorer in the top-of-the-table Premiership clash but Morelos should have really built on the lead in both the first and second halves.

Stats by WhoScored show Morelos had seven shots at goal versus Hearts but one of them hit the target and ex-Rangers player Foster was let down by the Colombia international’s finishing.

“This is a big chance, he’s got to hit the target and I think if he finds the back post there it’s [a goal],” said Foster when shown a replay of Morelos’ first-half miss at Ibrox on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night [BBC iPlayer].

“It was a strange game for Alfredo Morelos because his link-up play and his movement were excellent. But his finishing, he was misting things, he was swiping and missing things. It wasn’t quite there.”

Morelos has started this season as he started last season.

While he wasn’t as strongly linked with a move from Ibrox this summer as he was last year, the Colombian forward has really struggled to knuckle down and show the goalscoring form we’re all used to.

Morelos has just two goals to show for his name in his first eight Premiership appearances of the season.

In all competitions, the ex-HJK striker has scored five times in 15 outings but when you consider who he’s actually scored against, Malmo and Hibernian are the only decent teams.

He really needs to step it up.

While Morelos isn’t the only one who needs to improve for the Light Blues, if he had been in better form on Saturday, we would have beaten Hearts easily and that late goal wouldn’t have counted for anything other than a ruined clean sheet.

We need more from El Bufalo. A lot more.
