Gavin Newlands has slammed Steve Clarke for his inclusion of Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin in his recent Scotland squad.

Via their personal Twitter handle, the Scottish FA announced their squad at 1pm on Tuesday afternoon, and Clarke's decision to recall McLaughlin and pick Liam Kelly over Zander Clark has left the SNP MP fuming.

Newlands, took to Twitter to deliver his thoughts on the announcement.

He wrote, "Utterly farcical decision.

"Not only is Zander a better keeper than both Kelly & McLaughlin, he's playing regularly & in top form which you can't say about Liam & Jon.

"How are clubs like St Johnstone supposed to keep our best players if they must move to get Scotland recognition?"

Clarke knows best

It's funny to see a politician get involved in decisions regarding the national team.

Newlands is not even hiding his St Johnstone bias in that tweet and it's hilarious to see how such a mundane thing like a squad announcement has got him worked up.

The only reason McLaughlin was left out of the squad last month was because there was a Covid-19 scare in the Rangers camp.

Rangers

At a time when the Delta variant is rampant, it was a safe decision made by the Scotland boss.

It's not like McLaughlin hasn't been in form of late as he's kept two clean sheets in as many games within the span of a week.

He's 34 and comes with a lot of experience, something that Clarke will value, given the number of young players he's got in his squad.
