Steven Gerrard showers praise on John Lundstram after 1-0 win v Dundee

Rangers secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park on Saturday, with Joe Aribo’s early strike making all the difference.

Steven Gerrard would have expected more from his side, but with an eye on Thursday’s Europa League clash, he had no complaints.

The Rangers boss was pleased with the outstanding shift summer midfield signing John Lundstram, 27, put in, singling him out for praise after the game.

Gerrard told Rangers TV: “He was the best player on the pitch by a mile. I’ve been almost smiling in disbelief, really, at some of the reactions on the outside.

“John’s a fantastic player. He’s showed his quality in the last three games. Ok, he’s been finding his feet and it does take time to get up to speed and work out how people play, but he was an absolute powerhouse today.

“He was Man of the Match and the best player on the pitch by a mile.”

Five-star performance

The former Sheffield United star failed to hit the ground running at Ibrox following his arrival, and he was criticised for struggling in some of the games.

However, given the quality he showed for the Blades in the Premier League over the last two seasons, Lundstram was always eventually going to come good for Rangers, and his recent performances have caught the eyes of the manager.

Gerrard knew what he was going to get bringing the experienced midfielder to his team, and he would have never doubted his credential despite those early struggles.

The Englishman quickly reminded everyone of his quality at Dens Park, putting in a top defensive performance in midfield and controlling the game while in possession.

With Steven Davis unavailable against Dundee, Lundstram helped the Bears remain top of the Premiership table, and he will now look to keep replicating such display going forward and earn himself a permanent place in Gerrard’s starting XI.
