Rangers player ratings v Motherwell
Rangers’ stuttering start to the season continued on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Motherwell at Ibrox.
Fashion Sakala grabbed his first competitive goal for the Gers in the first half when he tapped in from a corner.
Despite all the pressure and chances Steven Gerrard’s men created, they failed to build on their lead and were eventually pegged back in the 66th minute when Kaiyne Woolery scored.
Ibrox News has rated the players’ performances versus Motherwell:
Allan McGregor – 6
Didn’t really have much to do against Motherwell. He was saved by Goldson in the first half after a mix-up allowed Tony Watt in on goal.
James Tavernier – 6
Tavernier’s crossing both in play and from corners caused problems for the Motherwell defence throughout the game. However, he was poor in the build-up to Motherwell’s equaliser. We’ll always be concerned about Tav’s defensive capabilities.
Jack Simpson – 2
Really not good enough. Simpson has always had a lot to prove to Rangers fans since Steven Gerrard signed him in January but he’s failed to deliver – again. He was at fault when Watt had the chance to score and was woeful when Motherwell equalised.
Connor Goldson – 6
Incredible challenge to deny Motherwell’s Watt a big goalscoring opportunity in the first half. Could have done better to stop the goal but was ultimately let down by Simpson and Borna Barisic.
Borna Barisic – 5
It wasn’t a great performance from Barisic. He struggled to cope with Motherwell’s quicker players and didn’t offer too much going forward.
Glen Kamara – 6
Kamara’s been a bit quiet this season, hasn’t he? It was a rather average performance by the Finland international, who could have done a lot better to help Gerrard’s side get a win. He was named the man of the match award on Rangers TV but we’ve no idea why.
Steven Davis – 6
Davis could have put us 2-0 ahead before the equalising goal when he misplaced a pass into the box horribly. He had a really good first half though and was subbed by Gerrard in the 81st minute.
Joe Aribo – 7
Our attackers combined really well for a good portion of the game and Aribo was at the heart of a lot of good moves. He’ll be disappointed to have not done more to help secure a win.
Scott Wright – 8 (Man of the match)
Wright was our best player at Ibrox on Sunday. Like Aribo, he was heavily involved in our attacking play and our best moves came through the former Aberdeen ace. Ryan Kent will have to do really well to get back into the side with Wright clearly playing better right now.
Kemar Roofe – 6
Linked up well with the other attackers but missed a sitter in the second half. Rangers’ lack of end product really cost them against the Steelmen this weekend.
Fashion Sakala – 7
Has Sakala replaced Cedric Itten as our designated goalscorer against Motherwell? It was great to see him get on the scoresheet in front of the fans at Ibrox.
Juninho Bacuna (on for Scott Wright 76′) – 5
Alfredo Morelos (on for Fashion Sakala ’76) – 5
Scott Arfield (on for Steven Davis 81′) – 5
In other Rangers news, a broadcaster has called for major action against the Gers after the Chris Sutton incident.
