Richard Foster blasts Borna Barisic for Rangers v Lyon
Richard Foster has singled out Rangers defender Borna Barisic for blame after the 2-0 defeat against Lyon.
The French side doubled their lead at Ibrox with a comical own-goal and but the Croatian was blasted for letting the ball into the box too easily.
Foster labelled the whole incident as a “calamity” and it is hard to argue against that after looking at the footage.
Speaking to the BBC last night, Foster was embarrassed watching the defending for the second goal at Ibrox.
“It’s a calamity,” he said.
“Again, it is poor from Barisic though out wide. McGregor produces a wonder save and then it goes in off his own player, in that fashion.”
Barisic has often had the microscope placed on him for his defending.
The Croatian international is often lauded for his attacking skill and output in the final third, but when the pressure is the other way round, he often struggles.
In these big games in Europe, clubs are going to press forward and the Bears are likely to be the underdogs compared to strong favourites domestically.
That leads to pressure in our own box, and defending such as this will not help us in our quest to progress past the group stages.
Barisic has been linked with a move away consistently, but will those links disappear if clubs start to see his performances on the biggest stage?
Time will tell, but one for certain is that the whole squad will have to perform better further down the line in the Europa League.
