Alan Hutton: Allan McGregor will need big performance for Rangers v Lyon
Alan Hutton has singled out Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor as the one player who needs to shine against Lyon.
The Ibrox veteran is set to start in the Europa League, nearly 14 years after shining in that memorable Champions League night in France.
Hutton labelled his former teammate as a “fine wine” and alongside Alfredo Morelos as key to the Bears’ hopes this evening.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the game this evening, Hutton singled out his former teammate as the one to watch.
“Some of Rangers’ best performances [under Steven Gerrard] have come on those Thursday nights,” he said. “He’ll want the same get up and go.
“[Allan McGregor] is like a fine wine, he keeps getting better. Every year he tells me this is the last year, but he keeps rolling himself out there making big moments with huge saves.
“He’ll have to have a big performance.”
Hutton sharing that McGregor claims it is his final year every single season is starting to make perfect sense.
Steven Gerrard is rotating his keepers even more than he did in the last campaign, with Jon McLaughlin consistently starting in the Scottish Premiership.
After both were affected by COVID-19 isolation rules, it was the latter who got the nod and struggled against St Johnstone.
So many times has McGregor saved the Bears in these famous Europa League nights since Gerrard arrived, and he is expected to be busy this evening.
Lyon may not be as powerful as they were during that famous win all those years ago, but they still have plenty of quality options, and will be a huge test – bring it on.
