Rangers Super Fans back Calvin Bassey to shine v Lyon on Thursday

Given the injury woes in the Rangers camp, there is a good chance that Steven Gerrard turns to Calvin Bassey to play out of position at centre-back.

The 21-year-old is a left-back by trade, but is capable of putting in a shift at the heart of the defence as well.

His involvement may depend on the availability of Connor Goldson, but if The Scottish Sun is to be believed then he’s been granted the green signal to play against Lyon on Thursday.

However, when posed the question of Bassey starting at centre-back, the Gers faithful were confident in his abilities to be deployed there.

They spoke a great deal about his physicality, something that is crucial while playing a French side filled with strong players.

Here’s what they said:

Gerrard’s choice

Goldson missed the weekend win against St Johnstone and was a major doubt for this game as well.

Gerrard was already missing Filip Helander and Jack Simpson so would not have wanted Goldson not playing.

However, Goldson may not be as sharp as Gerrard would like him and should he feel that in training, he could deploy Bassey at centre-back.

We’ve seen enough of the 21-year-old to know that he’s capable of putting in a shift there.

Such games will help him build his character and a good performance would go a long way in cementing a place in Gerrard’s plans for the future.

It remains to be seen what the Gers boss decides to do.
