Rangers forward Brandon Barker subject of 'unexpected' deadline-day pursuit
Rangers forward Brandon Barker is the subject of late interest from “unexpected quarters”, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile on the afternoon of deadline-day, Nixon claims the 24-year-old is a wanted man.
“Bit of late interest in Tom Eaves and Brandon Barker from unexpected quarters,” he said.
Ibrox exit imminent?
Sky Sports reported earlier in the day that the Englishman had been deemed “surplus to requirements” and would be allowed to exit Ibrox before the 11pm deadline.
Nixon’s update suggests he knows the club(s) in for Barker, but has not disclosed exactly who it is.
Barker joined the Gers from Manchester City in 2019 but he has failed to assert himself at Ibrox, making just 26 appearances over three seasons.
He failed to make an appearance for the Gers during the 2020/21 campaign before he joined English League One side Oxford United on loan in February.
Barker impressed in spurts there, scoring three goals in 22 appearances with one of his strikes voted as the club’s goal of the season.
The Manchester-born winger returned to Glasgow in the summer but he is way behind in the Gers pecking order with a whole host of attackers ahead of him as options for the front three.
He has just one year left on his Rangers contract, so this may be the final chance for the club to cash in on him, if they even can get a fee for him.
It may be that a free transfer is arranged so the Gers can get his wages off the books this season.
In other Rangers news, John Hartson branded the Gers ‘ridiculous’ live on Sky Sports on Sunday.
