Ally McCoist slams Leon Balogun in Rangers clash v Celtic

Ally McCoist was far from impressed by Rangers defender Leon Balogun in the Old Firm against Celtic this afternoon.

The Nigerian international was forced to start at right-back, with COVID-19 forcing the absence of both James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson.

One moment, in particular, left McCoist scratching his head when Balogun unnecessarily put his team under pressure with a foul while Celtic were moving forward.

Speaking during live coverage of the clash on Sky Sports this afternoon, McCoist couldn’t believe his eyes.

“Crazy decision,” he said.

“It’s madness – he probably didn’t know that Goldson was covering, he needs to speak to him.”

Crazy.

In the sense of getting a booking without needing too, yes it may have been a poor choice, but Balogun was just doing what he thought was necessary.

Seeing the players do whatever it takes and making these little sacrifices throughout huge ties like the Old Firm can make all the difference.

It breaks up the game, disrupts the flow and only minutes later, Filip Helander headed home the opener.

Apart from this moment, Balogun was solid as ever and kept one of the Scottish Premiership’s in-form players, Kyogo Furuhashi, quiet for nearly the entire game.

We have no complaints with one little mistake, especially given the magnitude of this performance on the biggest stage.

Patterson or Tavernier should be back available after the international break, but it is brilliant to see yet another player stand up when desperately needed.
