Tom English slams Steven Gerrard after Rangers defeat v Dundee United

BBC journalist Tom English has blasted Steven Gerrard for calling Dundee United ‘Dundee’ ahead of Rangers’ defeat at Tannadice on Saturday.

It’s a mistake that most suffer south of the border, not realising that Dundee United and Dundee are two different teams and Gerrard was guilty of that on Friday.

English took to his personal Twitter account after the Gers’ loss on Saturday and suggests Gerrard will definitely know which Tayside club he’s talking about in the future.

Rangers

“Dundee United absolutely outstanding,” said English. “Never let Rangers settle. Huge self-belief and work-rate. First team to give Rangers a properly bloody nose in the league in 17 months.

“Yesterday (Friday), Steven Gerrard referred to them twice as Dundee. Hmm. He won’t be making that mistake again”

Media out to get Gerrard

Rangers suffer their first defeat in the league in 41 matches and it didn’t take long for the media to start taking swipes at Gerrard.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder led this club to title glory last season without suffering a single Premiership defeat yet he’s being made out to be someone who doesn’t know what he’s on about in Scottish football.

Call it a slip of the tongue or just a moment of forgetfulness. Gerrard is fully aware there are two clubs in Dundee and he would never, on purpose, disrespect a club or anything like that.

However, people tend to differentiate between Manchester United and Manchester City easily enough so why can’t they do it with the Dundee teams? It’s one for Sky Sports to answer to as well as that’s regularly on their long list of Scottish football gaffes.

Either way, it’s a stick for pundits and journalists who have their agenda to beat Rangers and Gerrard with.

They’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

But guess what, even the best teams lose. It’s onto the players to bounce back from that and we really hope they do against Malmo next week.
