Glenn Middleton set to join St Johnstone on loan

Rangers attacker Glenn Middleton has reportedly told the club he wants to re-sign for St Johnstone on loan this season.

According to The Daily Record, the Gers have given the 21-year-old the green signal to move to Perth for the second year in a row.

The deal is expected to be concluded once St Johnstone return from their Europa League clash in Turkey against Galatasaray.

There have been other clubs that have shown an interest to sign him on loan this summer, but he’s informed Rangers that he has a desire to play for St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson again.

Good move

Middleton was unlikely to establish himself in the first team at the club this season so it’s a good thing that he’s moving to a team where he’s admired by the manager and hopefully, he can enjoy another successful stint in Perth.

He’s got another year left on his deal after the end of this season so it will give the decision-makers and Steven Gerrard an entire campaign to gauge whether they see him as one for the future or rather cash in on his services next summer.

The 21-year-old ended last season strongly by lifting a trophy for St Johnstone and some, including former Rangers defender Alan Hutton, believed that Gerrard could opt to keep the winger on for this season.

He told Football Insider, “He knows this opportunity for him to go and shine in pre-season. I think he’s done really well up to this moment and it seems like Gerrard is using him more and more.

“This is the moment where Gerrard will be keeping a close eye on him. He’ll be trying to figure out what he wants to do with him moving forward.”

While he makes a valid point of him having a good pre-season campaign, the professional season is a different kettle of fish altogether and he may serve as a bit-part player at the Ibrox while he would be a regular starter at McDiarmid Park.

For players at that age, getting first-team minutes is priority and we’re sure he’s going to be a success.

We’ll certainly be keeping our eyes on him.
