James Maxwell likely to leave on loan this summer - The Athletic

Rangers youngster James Maxwell could leave on loan this summer amid domestic and overseas interest.

According to The Athletic, Ayr United are keen on the 19-year-old’s services, and there is also interest from Norway in signing him this summer.

A loan move to the Norwegian top flight or a Scottish Premiership side is proving to be more viable at this point.

Last summer, the likes of Sheffield United, Hibernian and St Mirren wanted to sign him, but the Gers wanting a compensation fee along with a future sell-on percentage led to them cooling their interest in the young left-back.

Needs a loan move

Still only 19, Maxwell has plenty to learn and could polish his skills as a regular starter at a top flight club.

While we would prefer him to stay in Scotland so it would be easier to keep an eye on him, a move to Norway wouldn’t be the worst idea either.

Players often develop new skills when they move overseas as they tend to pick up the nuances of the prevalent footballing philosophy in that country.

Thus far, he’s enjoyed just one spell out on loan and that’s been at Scottish outfit Queen of South where he played incredibly well.

He established himself as a nailed on starter and made 32 appearances across all competitions.

Having moved to the Ibrox in 2017 in the aftermath of Falkirk’s youth system being scrapped, Maxwell has gone from strength to strength to become one of our academy’s top-rated prospects.

Head of Academy Craig Mulholland has been blown away by his performances.

Per the club’s official website, he said, “He has had a fantastic Academy journey over the last two years – changing position, being pushed in our European Games Programme, being selected by his country for the first time and now training regularly with our first team.

He did train with the first-team pre-season squad prior to the 2019/20 campaign and Steven Gerrard may look to call upon him in the coming weeks if the plans are to keep him at the club for the new season.

We’re excited to see him develop into a quality player and hopefully, be a regular in the senior team in the future.
