Alex Rae: I'm concerned over Connor Goldson contract
Rangers must tie Connor Goldson down to a new deal, claims Alex Rae.
The former Gers midfielder and BT Sport pundit is concerned that the defender is in the final year of his contract at Ibrox and there have been no updates about him extending.
The 28-year-old has been one of the first names of the team sheet since he joined from Brighton and Rae does not want Rangers to let go of him.
In his column for The Times, Rae wrote, “My only concern right now would be Connor Goldson because he’s in the final year of his contract [and] this isn’t a business model where they let players run down their contracts.
“So I’d like to see Goldson signing because he has been outstanding and is a leader.”
Need of the hour
Goldson has been a mainstay in this Rangers side and it’s hard to imagine a playing XI without his presence at the back. His leadership has been second to none and along with James Tavernier, he has marshalled this side exceptionally.
Not only is he a solid defender, but he is also good with the ball at his feet and helps us playing out from the back with ease.
We look a more resolute and organised side with the 28-year-old in the team and losing him for a free next summer would be extremely bad business by the club.
Signing a replacement of his calibre would prove to be an extremely expensive ordeal and it could take the new player some time to hit the ground running.
In Goldson, we’ve got the ideal centre-back who we envisage being at the club for the foreseeable future.
Thankfully, there are no extensive reports of him being linked with the exit door but there is going to be some nervousness until he puts pen to paper to a new deal.
