Gerrard wants to block Rangers selling Morelos to Porto
Steven Gerrard is in desperate talks with the Rangers hiearchy to stop Alfredo Morelos being sold to Porto this summer, according to Correio da Manhã.
The Portuguese newspaper reports Gerrard is trying to convince Ibrox officials that he can secure qualification to the Champions League group stages and therefore nullify the need to cash in on the 25-year-old Colombia international.
It is understood that making the group stages of Europe’s top club competition can net the Gers around £13.6million.
Porto are reportedly willing to pay £10.2million for Morelos but Rangers want £14.9million for him.
Correio da Manhã adds that El Bufalo is happy in Glasgow but would be open to joining Porto, who are willing to look at other options if they find it tough to land the Ibrox forward.
Trust in Stevie
Rangers can qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.
We’ll enter the competition at the third qualifying round and thankfully we’re seeded due to winning the league.
Gerrard’s men could play teams like Ludogorets, Malmo, Legia Warsaw and Brondby.
We’ve beaten some top teams in the Europa League in the last couple of seasons and they’re teams who are stronger than any potential opponents later this summer.
It’s a daunting proposition of course but we have full faith the Gers can get to the group stages and really put on a show for us.
However, Morelos’ future may be riding on it.
If we miss out and drop into the Europa League then Rangers might have to cash in on the striker to ensure they get as much money as possible for him.
Getting to the Champions League group stages will boost his value and also make him happier to stay but another campaign in the Europa League will have the opposite effect.
