Tottenham Hotspur set to make move for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could be the subject of a surprise swoopy by Tottenham Hotspur, according to Rudy Galetti.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile, the Italian journalist, who regularly appears on Il Pallone Gonfiato, made the bold claim on Saturday afternoon [26/06/21].

He wrote: “Hot hours at Tottenham. Steven Gerrard’s quotations for the Spurs bench are rising. With Nuno Espirito Santo on standby, the Rangers manager could become Paratici’s surprise strike.”

Waste of time

Speculation has always swirled around the future of Gerrard, and it always will. He’s a big name in football doing a spectacular job, so it’s just the nature of the beast.

There’s the temptation to dismiss these reports out of hand and ignore any exit talk, but there is likely to be credence to the information at least.

Tottenham would surely want Gerrard as manager – they’ve gone after pretty much every other top manager without success, so it’s no surprise that the Gers boss would come into the conversation.

He was mentioned many months ago when Jose Mourinho was sacked as Spurs boss, but talk dissipated as the likes of Antonio Conte and Paulo Fonseca became frontrunners.

Spurs have been one of the most consistent Premier League teams over the last decade, regularly making the top four and reaching a Champions League final in 2019.

Forbes also named them as the 10th most valuable club in the world in April.

But their hunt for a new manager has been a disaster, and their contenders have dropped like flies in recent weeks, which is why an approach for Gerrard is likely.

They were likely dissuaded by Rangers’ reluctance to part ways with the Liverpool legend, and it’s doubtful he would have been interested given he has the chance to lead the Light Blues into the Champions League, while Spurs are handed embarrassing entry into the newly-created Europa Conference League.

We can’t see how that would have changed over the last few months, and Gerrard would have been invested in shaping our transfer plans for the forthcoming season.

Spurs can try their luck again, but they’re likely to be hit by another brick wall of resistance.
