Report: Rangers-linked international defender close to completing move to Gent
According to Goal, IF Elfsborg defender Joseph Okumu, who has been linked with a move to Rangers, will not be moving to Scotland, but is set to join Belgian top flight side KAA Gent.
The report states that he has been given permission by his club to travel to Belgium and deal with the formalities before signing a deal.
He is understood to be in Gent currently negotiating the final terms of his contract, and once the two parties come to a resolution, he’s set to become a Gent player.
This news will have come as a major blow to Rangers, who were keen on signing the 24-year-old as they were looking to add to their defensive depth this summer. [Daily Record]
Sport Bladet reported that the Gers had made an offer for the Kenya international as well, but it seems that they have missed out on his signature.
Local rivals Celtic were also eyeing a move for the player, and much like us, will be left empty-handed in this quest to sign the defender.
Okumu isn’t a household name in European football, but has quietly gone on about his business and has shown massive progress every season.
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations was the competition where he showcased his phenomenal defensive ability, despite being a 22-year-old and relatively inexperienced centre-back at the time.
Kenya may have not done too well, but Okumu was one of the competition’s standout performers and his exploits there earned him a move to Sweden.
We’re likely to part ways with a couple of defenders this summer and signing someone like Okumu would’ve been a great way to strengthen our side ahead of our first Champions League campaign under Steven Gerrard.
Given that he’s already in advanced talks with Gent, it’s unlikely that we could convince him to join, and would now have to look elsewhere.
