Alex McLeish: Steven Gerrard will be watching Borna Barisic injury closely
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has insisted that Steven Gerrard will be keeping a close eye on the fitness of Rangers defender Borna Barisic.
The Croatian international has been suffering from major back problems and will miss out on the Czech Republic clash this afternoon.
McLeish believes that there must be full confidence in the Croatian medical staff though, who won’t force Barisic to play through the pain.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I believe he will.
“You would like to think that Croatia’s medical team have been working all hours to get him to some state of fitness again, they’re not daft.
“They will know if he’s not ready, even if it’s a slight backache.”
The last thing we need at Ibrox would be a major headache at left-back.
Calvin Bassey had his own problems towards the end of last season, with Joe Aribo being forced to drop into that position.
Gerrard will be watching closely on how this develops, as it could affect his side in the Champions League qualifiers next month.
That is the last thing we want, given how important Barisic is to this side. Of course, we want him to shine on the biggest stage, but his health and well-being is more important.
Should Croatia get to the knockout stages of the tournament, which don’t start until the end of next week, he could get his chance to feature.
Barisic must be patient, he will get his chance.
