Rangers release Nathan Young-Coombes amid Brentford transfer speculation

Rangers have confirmed that young attacker Nathan Young-Coombes has left Ibrox after two years in Glasgow.

Young-Coombes, 18, joined the Gers from Chelsea in 2019 but has failed to break into the first team and will now be released among a number of other players.

Rangers confirmed the news in a statement on their website on Tuesday with academy chief Craig Mulholland tipping them all to go on and have “strong careers” elsewhere.

Premier League next for Young-Coombes?

We were all a bit excited about Young-Coombes when he swapped Stamford Bridge for Ibrox in 2019 but he’s never really come close to breaking into Steven Gerrard’s senior squad.

The former England youth international had some good games for the youth sides at Ibrox but simply didn’t take it to the next level.

Fortunately for him, a Premier League move could be beckoning.

In May, freelance sports journalist Robin Bairner reported on the Football Transfers website that Brentford are set to sign the “exciting” young forward.

Bairner, who’s written for Goal, claims that Young-Coombes had been able to speak to other teams about a pre-contract deal as he was in the final months of his contract with the Light Blues.

Brentford have won promotion to the Premier League and if Young-Coombes does return to West London then there’s bound to be a big chance for him to impress in England’s top-tier.

Of course, it could be difficult.

If he didn’t get anywhere near Gerrard’s squad, how can he expect to break into a team that has just won promotion to the Premier League?

Brentford have a knack for developing young talent and turning a profit on them so we’ll be keeping an eye on Young-Coombes’ progress in the coming months and years if he does join the Bees.

In other Rangers news, the younger brother of this Gers star has had a trial in Glasgow.
