Fabrizio Romano: Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is on Everton radar
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is a wanted man in the Premier League, with Everton keen on him, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist reported on his weekly podcast that the Goodison Park outfit have eyes on the former Liverpool skipper.
Howveer he made it clear that the Rangers boss is not their top target as the search for Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement intensifies.
“They have a long list with many options,” the Sky Sports Italy transfer expert said on the Here We Go Podcast.
“There’s some mention from England about Steven Gerrard, that is true but he’s not at the first position on the list. Let’s see in the next days what Everton will decide.
“They want to decide and to plan for the right man for the job.
“It was a shock with Ancelotti so they need to plan for something new, a new project. Also, the players didn’t know about the situation with Ancelotti. They were really surprised [Tuesday] so let’s see what happens in the next days but Everton are planning with director Marcel Brands to rebuild with a new manager.”
Rangers cannot afford to lose Gerrard anytime soon
With a Scottish Premiership title to defend and Champions League football to look forward to next season, the Ibrox outfit have to hand the boss a new improved deal this summer.
Everton are not the only ones keen on Gerrard, with Tottenham Hotspur also linked with a potential move for him a couple of weeks ago[90min].
While his Liverpool connection would see him emotionally rule out a move to Goodison Park, another bigwig from the English top-flight would come calling sooner or later.
The rebuilding job at Rangers is nowhere done despite sealing our 55th title at the expense of Celtic in 2020-21, and the board needs to reward Gerrard this summer.
We need to back him in the transfer window and get most of his desired targets, and keeping him at Ibrox for at least two more campaigns is pertinent.
The Liverpool job is expected to come calling someday, but many English clubs will be keeping tabs on the Rangers hero, and we simply cannot afford to lose him anytime soon.
