Ally McCoist likens McGregor to Rangers legend Andy Goram

Rangers great Ally McCoist has stated that it’s difficult to differentiate between Andy Goram and Allan McGregor after watching the Gers keeper this season.

Goram, who was McCoist’s teammate at Rangers, is widely regarded as the best keeper in Rangers history.

Since then, McCoist has watched a number of players position themselves between the sticks for the Gers, and believes that McGregor could be on par with the club legend.

Speaking to The Daily Record, McCoist said, “Do you know the biggest compliment I could pay Allan? With the way he keeps going and keeps performing, I’m at a stage where I cannot now split him and Andy.

“But how can you now split them? McGregor made two saves this season that good I didn’t know he’d even made them until I watched the TV replay – and I was at the games. I have got to say that those saves were only world class.

He then specifically referred to the save made from Lukas Masopust’s goal-bound header in Prague that kept Rangers in the contest. McCoist said, “If those other ones were world class, that save was from outer space. I felt it was one of the greatest saves I’ve ever seen. It was absolutely incredible.”

What a claim

Fans are known to make such claims based on their recency bias, but for McCoist to say it, it means something.

In our book, Goram’s legacy is unparalleled and will probably never be matched. That said, having such a solid keeper like McGregor who’s even getting the debate started, tells you how good a player he is.

The 39-year-old has kept 16 clean sheets in 24 games this season and has not conceded more than one goal in any league game – which is remarkable – to say the least.

We don’t know for how long he will be playing for, but we’re certainly enjoying watching every minute of him in goal for us.
