Alex McLeish: This is what I told Steven Gerrard after big Rangers win v Celtic
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has revealed a conversation with Steven Gerrard after Rangers big 4-1 win over Celtic on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears have collapsed in recent seasons due to poor form and injuries, something that has been addressed during this campaign to great effect.
McLeish insisted that he told Gerrard that his success is all down to the recruitment, with his additions in the final third being a “revelation.”
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “We managed to get a word with Steven after the game.
“I said to him, the last couple of seasons, it has been difficult in the second half of the season with injuries to the centre-forward.
“Now we have the likes of Roofe and Itten, and Roofe has been a revelation. I said to Steven that the recruitment has been great, and that was the key.
After years of relying on Alfredo Morelos, the Colombian international finally has numerous options challenging him for that spot.
Roofe proved his worth with two goals on Sunday, and Jermain Defoe even fired home after coming off the bench to rub salt into the wounds.
Add to that Cedric Itten and Scott Wright, who can also play up there, and Gerrard has plenty of options.
McLeish was at the Old Firm, and Gerrard will surely appreciate the view of the club legend to build on this success from this season.
