We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has reacted to claims that Rangers winger Ryan Kent is worth up to £25million after his stellar Scottish Premiership campaign.
Former Bears midfielder Alex Rae recently shared that with the likes of Leeds United interested, Steven Gerrard should demand that figure.
McLeish believes that it would be hard to turn down that offer, but also that it proves how much bigger Scottish football is becoming.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “They would obviously not.
“I’m sure Premier League style money coming in would make it hard to turn down offers like that. That is probably Premier League player level.
“When you get those type of figures for a Scottish player, that is similar to what they’d pay for players from abroad.
“A year or two ago, English clubs can come and pluck our players for half of that. Now, with figures like that, Alex has put him in the elite.”
The Bears putting this type of price tag on one of their players would show just how far we have come in recent years under Gerrard.
Kent has been one of the standout stars at Ibrox since arriving from Liverpool, and the Gers reaching the Champions League and winning the title should put them in a position where they may not be desperate to sell.
McLeish believes it would be hard to turn down that type of money, but that could be because we have rarely ever seen that in Scotland.
It could come down to where Kent wants to play, and the chance to prove himself in England once again could be too much to turn down.
