Steven Gerrard has confirmed fresh injuries to Rangers duo Bongani Zungu and Jack Simpson after the Scottish Cup clash against Cove.
The Light Blues cruised to victory in the end, winning 4-0 at Ibrox thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe, Jermain Defoe and Nathan Patterson.
It was suggested that both could have started the Third Round tie, but Zungu missed out completely with Simpson warming the bench.
Speaking to the Daily Record ahead of the Scottish Cup clash against the League One minnows, Gerrard confirmed the rarely-used duo picked up problems.
“We wanted to start Jack Simpson but he rolled his ankle and we won’t take any chances,” he said. “It’s not a bad problem.
“Bongani Zungu has a hip problem and unfortunately hasn’t made it.”
Gerrard admitted he wanted to hand Simpson his first start for the club alongside Scott Wright, and that will have hurt the defender watching on.
It was the perfect clash for the likes of Zungu and Simpson to prove themselves even further, although it just wasn’t to be.
You have to think that could be the end of the line for the South African international at Ibrox, and his loan spell from Amiens simply hasn’t worked.
With a potential ban from the SFA on the horizon, that could be the season over, if that happens, he can wave goodbye to Glasgow.
As for Simpson, he needs to get his head down and hope for another chance before the end of this season in any competition.
