Rangers star Joe Aribo reacts to comparisons to Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha
Rangers playmaker Joe Aribo is following in the footsteps of Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha and has been left blown away by the comparisons.
The Bears midfielder has been handed the number 10 shirt for his national side, and that has led to many remembering the former Paris Saint-Germain hero.
Aribo admitted that if he could fill the shoes left by Okocha slightly, he would be delighted with his contribution to the national side.
Speaking to Nigerian outlet Busy Buddies, Aribo was blown away by the potential of being mentioned in the same sentence as such a hero in his country.
“Jay-Jay Okocha is legendary, he is a legend. He is amazing,” he said. “Even if I could fill his shoes in the slightest, I will be happy with that.
“I know what the No. 10 shirt means to the nation. But I’ll just say that I just need to be the best that I can be and give the best; what I can do for the team to help the team.
“But in terms of filling the shoes, I can’t fill Jay Jay’s shoes. He’s a different level, honestly. He is a legend.”
Steven Gerrard has transformed Aribo, and when you consider that he arrived from Charlton Athletic after a season in League One, his progression has been incredible.
The 24-year-old has been a constant figure in midfield for the Bears, and his ability and power to push forward on the ball is frightening for other teams.
Okocha was one of the best in the world at getting on the ball and embarrassing defenders when they attempted to challenge him, and Aribo is in the ballpark as he gradually gets stronger.
This is a brilliant comparison to have, and if Aribo can get any closer to that level while at Ibrox, we have something massive to look forward to.
