Chris Iwelumo was blown away by the quality of Alfredo Morelos’ goal as Rangers won 3-0 against St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday.
Steven Gerrard’s men could win the title on Sunday if Celtic drop points against Dundee United as the Gers need just one more point in order to seal their 55th league title themselves.
Morelos, 24, grabbed his fourth goal in as many Premiership games in style in the first half against St Mirren, leading to ex-Scotland international Iwelumo singing his praises on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night.
He said: “St Mirren look a little bit laboured, they’re not really chasing it, allowing Rangers to dictate the tempo.
“[Glen] Kamara here, the weight of the pass, you’re happy with the defender going out with Morelos but look at the angle. It’s an outstanding finish.
“That’s four in four for him – ridiculous return.
“As a goalkeeper, you’re covering your near post and happy with Morelos going away from goal but with the quality he’s got and the accuracy of the finish, different class.”
Man on a mission
We’ve been saying it for a few weeks now but Morelos is definitely back to his best on the basis of his last five or six matches.
In Europe, he scored once and assisted six goals – yes, six – in the two-legged win over Royal Antwerp and has also netted in each of his last four Premiership outings against Hibs, Dundee United, Livingston and St Mirren.
Morelos is yet to score against Celtic in 11 attempts since joining Rangers from HJK Helsinki in 2017.
Up next in the league for Rangers is a trip to Parkhead, where they could confirm themselves as champions with a point if the Bhoys beat Dundee United this weekend.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if Morelos secured us the title by scoring in the Old Firm?
He’s been a crucial part of our return to glory in the last few years and for him to end that transformation by breaking his Celtic hoodoo would be perfect.
In other Rangers news, Barry Ferguson’s made a big claim about Morelos’ future at Ibrox.
