Chris Sutton just can’t resist himself as he aimed yet another on-air dig at Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos for an apparent ‘dive’ v Royal Antwerp.
The former Hoops hero might be the most derided figure in Ibrox quarters and he has done his popularity ratings no favours after his latest outburst at Gers favourite Morelos.
After playing a starring role in the 5-2 win over Royal Antwerp on Thursday evening to send the Light Blues into the last 16 of the Europa League, one would think all headlines would be of a positive nature.
However, appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘606 Phone-In’ show, Sutton once again took the opportunity to criticise the 24-year-old.
He said: “Our Alfie did let himself down with a desperate dive in the second half and Rangers were awarded their 237th penalty of the season.
“All the same, well done Alf – that was great, in fact it was sensational.”
Sutton’s co-host Robbie Savage fired back: “Come on Chris give him a break, you’ve said well done then you’ve hammered him! Absolutely shocking!”
Someone lend Sutton some spectacles
We’re past the point of even being remotely surprised at the nonsense Sutton spouts now.
Maybe it was a light-hearted, throwaway comment but more likely is that it is further deflection tactics to take away from his own team’s failings.
The Gers can extend our lead over Celtic at the top of the Premiership to 18 points when we face Livingston on Wednesday while our Old Firm rivals will be looking on with envy on March 11 when we travel to Prague to face Slavia in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Morelos doesn’t need any further fuel to lead us to glory this season.
Sutton’s comments will be water off a duck’s back to the Colombia international and he won’t be changing his game for anyone.
It was clearly a penalty against Antwerp and the lack of reaction among their players told the story.
Time to concentrate on your own team, Sutton.
