BBC Sportscene pundits Michael Stewart and Steven Thompson saw shades of Odsonne Edouard in Joe Aribo’s performance for Rangers against Dundee United.
Aribo ran the show in Sunday’s 4-1 win against the Tangerines as he picked up a goal and an assist at Ibrox.
Speaking after the game, Thompson and Stewart raved over Aribo’s performance and said he played in a similar fashion to Edouard at Celtic.
While analysing some footage of Aribo, Thompson said, “It’s such good close control on the ball. It reminds me a wee bit of [Odsonne] Edouard at Celtic as well, with how he manipulates the ball.
Stewart replied, “Obviously it’s a different position but yeah you’re right, it’s the same type of technique [to Edouard] to be able to drop the shoulder in tight areas and leave players for dead.
“All afternoon he [Aribo] was a constant threat and Dundee United really didn’t know what to do with him.”
Aribo was the Gers’ main outlet in Sunday’s game and he was deserving of the man of the match award.
After his goal against Antwerp in midweek, it looks as if Aribo has hit a solid run of form just at the right time.
We are just seven points away from the title and a good performance away from progression in the Europa League.
Having an in form Aribo in the squad can be a huge asset to Steven Gerrard as he is unstoppable on his day and he showed that against Dundee United.
His goal was nothing short of sensational and the comparisons to Edouard are worthy, putting all Old Firm rivalries aside.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a Gers fan who won’t begrudgingly admit that Edouard is a quality player and if Aribo is starting to play like him then that can only be good news.
