Michael Stewart and Neil McCann were showering Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor with praise on BBC Sportscene after the Gers won 1-0 against Celtic on Saturday.

Callum McGregor’s own-goal decided the second Old Firm derby of the season after Nir Button was sent off but it was McGregor’s performance in goals that led to Rangers earning the victory and moving 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

McGregor, 38, made a number of stunning saves to keep Celtic’s attackers at bay.

Ex-Rangers player McCann was stunned by what he saw from the experienced shot-stopper.

“What a performance, what a goalkeeper this guy is,” McCann said on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night.

“His mentality, his concentration levels are outstanding.

“I don’t know how many times I saw Andy Goram break Celtic’s heart over the years as a Rangers player against Celtic when they were dominating and creating chances.

“Allan McGregor has fast become an absolute legend of the club and I think if this is the team that stops 10 in a row, this man will have had a massive say.

“That is an unreal stop. He’s going one way and then goes the other. It’s a magnificent strong hand.”

When discussing McGregor’s save from Leigh Griffiths, Stewart added: “It’s a wonderful save. It keeps Rangers in the game when they were under the cosh big time.”

Cometh the hour, cometh the man

McGregor was absolutely outstanding against Celtic – and that’s not the first time we’ve said that about the Rangers goalkeeper.

According to stats by Wyscout, the 38-year-old made three saves from three shots at goal against him on Saturday and was called upon to use his reflexes to stop two of them.

McGregor has prevented 3.09 goals this season, which ranks him third among other goalkeepers in the Premiership.

It says a lot that McGregor ranks so highly despite Rangers conceding the fewest shots against them all season [114].

It suggests that when shots do come McGregor’s way, they are usually very good goalscoring opportunities for opposing attackers, which calls upon the goalkeeper to make a very good save.

Some of the saves McGregor made against Celtic were more than very good. They were unreal. They were world-class and played a major role in a huge victory in the history of Rangers Football Club.

In other Rangers news, fans were gushing over this outfielder’s performance against Celtic.
