Club brace themselves for fight to keep attacker reportedly wanted by Rangers
Airdrie boss Ian Murray is preparing himself to receive bids for Rangers and Celtic target Thomas Robert in the near future.
Speaking to the Daily Record recently, Murray conceded that bids are going to come as French attacker Robert continues to impress for the League One outfit: “It wouldn’t surprise me if we have a fight to keep him. Thomas has done really, really well.”
Murray would go on to add: “We’ve had loads of clubs looking at him, a few of them were pretty impressed.
“Were they impressed enough to make a bid, I’m not sure, but I think there are a couple who are not too far away from that.”
Hearts and Hibs are also believed to be in the race to sign Robert.
Murray has previously told the player to stay put for the sake of his development, but his impressive performances may mean that a move is inevitable.
Potential bargain deal for Rangers
Rangers have also been linked with a move to sign Siriki Dembele in recent weeks, so an exciting and pacey winger appears to be on Steven Gerrard’s wishlist.
However, the Peterborough winger is expected to cost at least £2million, which could make Robert the more appealing option for Rangers.
When comparing the two, both players have experience of Scottish football, with Dembele coming through the ranks at Dundee United and Ayr, but only Robert has played any senior football in the country.
At only 20 years of age and making the move up from League One, it remains to be seen how expensive a deal might be, but in those circumstances, it is unlikely to be anywhere near Peterborough’s asking price for Dembele.
Four years his junior, Robert may represent the better long term deal that fits in with the current transfer approach at the club – with the young Frenchman having more potential sell-on value.
