Ibrox View: Outshone Rangers man didn't do enough to force way into Gerrard's plan v Poznan

Rangers midfielder Bongani Zungu made his first Europa League start for the club against Lech Poznan and just his second in total since arriving in October.

Having shown a few flashes since pitching up at Ibrox, plenty of fans were excited to see him given the opportunity to start on the big stage.

Given 76 minutes in the Gers 2-0 win over the Polish side, Zungu did nothing wrong and was largely tidy on the ball and combative in duels.

Overall, the Amiens loanee completed 42 of the 51 passes he attempted, an accuracy rate of 82%, while he did not deliver a key pass. He took one shot, which was off target, won one of the two aerial duels he competed in, completed two of three tackles and made three interceptions (via WhoScored).

In just his second start for the club, this was hardly a poor effort, but given the level of competition at Steven Gerrard’s disposal, there was little in this match that suggested he should be challenging Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield for regular starting minutes.

By comparison, Kamara completed 62 passes at a 95% accuracy rate against Lech Poznan, making two key passes and winning 100% of the tackles he attempted (via WhoScored).

On just his second start for the club, the South African international should by no means be written off. He has shown plenty of ability in his short time and the club and looks a really good option. However, he is looking to earn a place in one of the best-functioning midfields in Scotland and to be frank, across the Europa League.

With the games coming on a regular basis between now and the New Year, Zungu will get more opportunities to start and his presence will allow Gerrard to rest his starters. It is in this time period that he must prove his worth and begin to shine brighter than ever if he wants to become a starter in Rangers’ biggest matches.
