Rangers went into their Europa League clash with Benfica on Thursday looking to banish the nightmare in Portugal weeks ago.

James Tavernier will be looking to guide his side to the knockout stages of the European competition once again, and he started the clash in the perfect way.

The Bears went into half-time 1-0 to the good at Ibrox, and it was the skipper who was at the heart of everything – when isn’t he?

Rangers took an early lead in Glasgow, and it was Scott Arfield who got the goal.

It looked like it would never go in when Tavernier hit the bar when it was way easier to score, but Arfield was there to save his captain’s blushes.

Tavernier definitely takes the title of the best-attacking defenders when you look at his returns in goals and assists this season.

The 29-year-old has been doing it for years, but this season he has been phenomenal. In all competitions, he has already scored 13 and assisted a further seven – more than most midfield and forward options have managed.

Many Rangers fans have reacted to the first-half performance of Tavernier, claiming he has no right to be as attacking he is, but that no-one can stop him.

The majority claimed that he is easily the Player of the Tournament in Europe already and that his involvement in Arfield’s goal was “Ronaldo-esque.”
