'I'm a Celtic fan and...' - BBC Sportscene pundit claims Rangers don't need this first-team star

BBC Sportscene pundit Chris Iwelumo admits that although he supports Celtic, he is blown away by how Rangers have started the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season.

After 14 matches, Steven Gerrard’s side are nine points ahead of Celtic, who have played two fewer matches than their Old Firm rivals.

Rangers have been scoring goals for fun and are also managing to shut out opponents with ease with 37 goals scored and only three conceded.

James Tavernier is the Gers’ top goalscorer with 12 goals in all competitions while his tally of eight goals in the Scottish Premiership is not beaten by anyone [BBC Sport].

The right-back’s stunning record in front of goal, coupled with goals from other players in Gerrard’s squad, has led to ex-Scotland international Iwelumo claiming Alfredo Morelos isn’t really needed at Ibrox at the minute.

“Rangers are doing everything right. I’m a Celtic fan and I’m looking at that result and it hurts me. I’m thinking, ‘bloody hell’. I’m looking at the table, 38 points, played 14 games; Celtic on 29, played 12. I’d rather have the points than the games in hand because of the pressure,” Iwelumo told The Terrace Scottish Football Podcast, as transcribed by the Scotsman.

“Rangers at the minute are doing everything right and the goals are coming from everywhere.

“James Tavernier, he’s got better and better and better. He’s their top scorer and he’s got the most assists, and he’s their right-back.

“They’ve got [Jermain] Defoe coming in, Kemar Roofe scoring, Brandon Barker chipping in… Alfredo Morelos doesn’t even need to come off the bench.”

We get what Iwelumo is trying to say, but we don’t agree with him at all.

Tavernier might be Rangers’ top goalscorer in all competitions this season but Morelos is behind him in second with seven goals.

The Colombia international has struggled to get back to his best after a summer of being strongly linked with a move away from Ibrox but he’s still popped up to score some big goals this season.

Morelos scored the winner against Lech Poznan, got a goal and assist in the 3-3 draw with Benfica and bagged a vital goal in the 2-2 draw with Hibs in the league.

We need to see more from Morelos, in all honesty, but would we want to see Rangers try and win the Scottish Premiership title without him? Absolutely not.

Gerrard does not need to tinker with his squad at all between now and the end of the season because he’s struck a good balance with what he has at his disposal.

Why risk upsetting that balance in January?
