Exclusive: Alex McLeish praises reported Rangers target Jacob Murphy

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that reported Rangers target Jacob Murphy “could do something up in Scotland”.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss praised the Newcastle United winger for his impressive pace and general liveliness.

As per reports, Steven Gerrard’s men have already made an approach for the 25-year-old this summer, although no agreement between themselves and the Toon Army has been reached.

More recently, the Glasgow Times have suggested that the wide man is keen for a loan move to go ahead in the coming weeks.

And McLeish has argued that he could make a real impact north of the border.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “He looks lively.

“I definitely feel like he could do something up in Scotland.

“He’s got good speed. We know that defences don’t like playing against people with great pace.

“He’s quite a sharp player and I’m sure he would enhance the Rangers setup if he was part of the squad and Newcastle decided to let him go.”

Murphy has struggled to establish in the north east since signing for the Magpies from Norwich City in a deal worth around £10 million back in 2017.

The winger has played 41 times for Newcastle in that spell, and has spent time on loan with West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday – scoring nine goals and registering six assists for the latter last season.
