'Tweet of the day' - Many Rangers fans delighted by Bradley Wiggins photo in classic Gers shirt

Sir Bradley Wiggins has taken to Twitter to post a photo of himself in a retro Rangers shirt – and it’s safe to say that fans are absolutely loving it.

The cyclist, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, shared a series of snaps with his 66,000 followers showing him relaxing in the classic Adidas home shirt from the 1996/97 campaign.

The British icon captioned his post: “Groundhog Day”, in reference to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

Wiggins has always been renowned for his love of mod culture and his keen sense of style, and has previously collaborated with popular brand Fred Perry on a number of collections.

And he’s proven once again that he’s a man of “impeccable taste”, as one Twitter user puts it, with his choice of Gers shirt.

With its instantly recognisable three stripe design, and that iconic white collar, the shirt immediately evokes images of Paul Gascoigne and his bleached blonde hair tearing about the Ibrox turf in the late ’90s.

But Wiggo’s outfit isn’t just an aesthetic choice.

The sporting hero has previously opened up on his love for the Gers, who he started following back in the 1990s following Gazza’s move from Lazio.

A lot of Bears on Twitter didn’t seem to realise this, however, and were eager to welcome him to the family.

But Wiggins’ allegiances are a reflection of just how special this club truly is.

For a young lad who grew up in north London to be bitten by the Ibrox bug over 20 years ago, and for him still to be following the Gers all these years later, shows just how easy it is to fall head over heels for the famous Light Blues.

For every adoring Gers fans in his replies there were one or two outraged Celtic fans giving him stick, but that’s hardly anything new given the bitterness of the rivalry, and the Ibrox love-in far outweighed the Hoops’ insults.

And Ibrox News have picked out a selection of those tweets that really matter below:
