Rangers defender Nikola Katic has claimed that Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes is “almost” as good as Alfredo Morelos.

The 24-year-old led the line for his side at Ibrox on Sunday, with the Gers picking up all three points in a narrow 1-0 win.

But the Croatian defender was left impressed by the battle he faced against the physical Lions hitman.

As quoted by the Daily Record, he said: “When you play against a striker like Dykes it’s always tough too because he is really good.

“Almost he’s on the same level as Alfredo and I think he will become a really top player, it is always hard to play against him.”

Is Katic giving a fair assessment here?

He would know much better than we do, of course, but this feels like huge praise from the Ibrox man.

We all know how good Alfredo is, and even though he’s hit a bit of a dip in form since the winter break, he still has a staggering 29 goals to his name so far this season.

For his part, Dykes has a slightly less eye-catching 12 in 30 appearances, but by no means is that a bad record.

But while his goalscoring stats may not be earth-shattering, a quick look at the stats shows just how much a nuisance Dykes must be to play against.

So far this term he has averaged 19.92 aerial duels for Livi so far this season, as per Wyscout, and his success rate generally hovers around the 43% mark.

In short, he is a great physical presence, and even if he isn’t winning every long ball, he’s ensuring that a defender is having to battle him to make sure they do.

Given Katic’s glowing praise, could he be somebody the Gers look at it in the future?

They could surely do a whole lot worse.
