Rangers had to leave it late to get a result against Hibernian on Wednesday evening, but got absolutely no help from referee Bobby Madden in doing so.

It feels as if every other week we have some kind of refereeing controversy surrounding the Gers, but honestly, the display but on by the man in the middle at Ibrox yesterday was mind-bogglingly bad at times.

Refereeing is not an easy job by any means. Things happen quickly, and without the benefit of replays to aid with the task at hand, mistakes are bound to happen. Even with a VAR in England, controversy is never too far away.

But while one or two errors are forgivable, there are some that are obvious, and happen so often that you can’t help but fume at the officials.

There was a prime example of this in the Gers’ 2-1 win over Hibs last night.

With the clock just ticking into the 89th minute, Allan McGregor launched a long ball out of his hands and over the top of the visitors’ backline, with Alfredo Morelos immediately looking to give chase.

Except, he wasn’t able to, because Lewis Stevenson all but jumped on his back and wrestled him to the ground to prevent him from bursting down the right flank.

It was, without any semblance of over-exaggeration, a rugby tackle, and yet, for some unknown reason that only he would be able to tell you, Madden saw fit to keep his cards in his pocket.

This was the most blatant booking you will ever see, and while it didn’t have any bearing on the match or its outcome in the end, it was a worrying piece of officiating to witness nonetheless.

You would like to think that the SFA will ask questions of Madden, but realistically, will that happen? I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Here’s how Gers supporters reacted to the incident on social media…
