Former England international Kevin Phillips has claimed that Rangers defender Connor Goldson would be a great signing for Championship high-flyers West Bromwich Albion.
It was reported recently that the Baggies have set their sights on a deal for the Ibrox ace after his impressive performances in Glasgow.
Phillips is a former West Brom player, of course, and he feels that the 27-year-old would be an ideal addition for Slaven Bilic’s side.
“Well yeah, he would and Slaven, they would have done his homework. You probably want someone to come in at this stage of the season that has got that experience of big games,” he told Football Insider.
“Let’s face it, every game from now until the end of the season for West Brom is a big game. Someone that’s got the experience of the Championship, of course, if you can add someone.
“You want to add players who will bolster the squad, enhance it and challenge other players for their position.”
Will Rangers be able to hold onto Goldson this month?
You’d like to think so, wouldn’t you? As much as West Brom will be hugely keen to bring him in to help with their promotion push, Gers are in the midst of a title fight. They can’t afford to lose a key player like Goldson.
The Baggies will be able to offer big wages and probably a decent transfer fee, but Steven Gerrard will be telling the board ‘nobody leaves this month without my say so’.
The manager would surely be furious if Goldson were to be sold, and so it’s highly unlikely that he will be.
Bilic may want the centre back, and Phillips may think it’d be a great signing, but there’s surely no way it happens this month.
In other Rangers news, the club were reportedly set to announce a permanent signing on Saturday.
