Rangers manager Steven Gerrard opted to omit young full-back Nathan Patterson from his starting XI against St. Mirren on Wednesday night, and it’s fair to say that many supporters were disappointed by the decision.

The full-back impressed immensely on his senior debut against Stranraer on Friday evening, as per Ibrox News itself, but was benched for the Scottish Premiership clash against the Saints, leading to an outcry from some fans.

To be fair to the boss though, you can understand the reasoning behind his choice.

It’s exciting to see a young talent shine on his debut in the manner that Patterson did, but it’s also really important that he isn’t crushed by the weight of expectation that can come with a meteoric rise.

Based on how confident he looked last week, there’s every chance that he would have taken another start in his stride, but when the lad is still just a teenager, why rush him into anything?

Jon Flanagan is a very capable deputy, and there will certainly be plenty more opportunities for Patterson to prove himself in the future.

A wise, if somewhat underwhelming decision from the manager, all things considered.
