Rangers are likely to have a relatively quiet transfer window in terms of incomings this month.
The Gers seem more intent on offloading players than they are on bringing them in, with Steven Gerrard telling Sky Sports that he still expects three or four players to leave Ibrox in the coming weeks.
The boss did also leave the door open to the possibility of one player coming in, however, provided the necessary deadwood can be cut away.
And according to Football Insider, his priority will be to land a winger who can help ease his selection problems on the right flank.
Joe Aribo has been Gerrard’s preferred option in that position in recent times, and the report suggests that forgotten man Jamie Murphy could be set for an exit, while young starlet Glenn Middleton is likely to complete another loan move after being recalled from Hibernian early.
Similarly, Sheyi Ojo has endured a mixed start to life in Glasgow since arriving on loan from Liverpool over the summer, while Brandon Barker has yet to make a proper impression on the manager.
That leaves Aribo as Gerrard’s only consistently viable option on the right – a fact he is looking to amend.
Bearing all of that in mind, you can understand why Rangers would be so keen on a new face in that position.
Initially, looking at the plethora of talent available to Gerrard, it’s easy to assume that he wouldn’t need anybody else, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of the players available to him aren’t at a level whereby they could seamlessly fill in for Aribo if needed, and that’s a problem.
The last thing anybody at Ibrox needs is a dip in quality in any area over the second half of the season, and so a right winger could prove to be a smart move, provided the right man can be found.
