Rangers will need all of the experience they have in order to maintain their title push between now and the end of the season.
Steven Gerrard’s side knows that a win in their game in hand puts them above Celtic. The likes of Jermain Defoe will have a massive role to play in that, replacing the suspended Alfredo Morelos.
Other players such as Steven Davis will also be expected to step up, just like he did in their recent 2-1 victory over their fierce rivals.
Barry Ferguson has claimed that signing the duo could have created somewhat of a problem for Gerrard last season due to their lack of action at the time.
“In some ways, the signing of Steve Davis and Jermain Defoe presented Gerrard with a bit of a problem last time around,” he wrote in the Daily Record.
“It was a no-brainer to bring in that kind of quality but at the same time there was a very good reason both players were available – because they had hardly kicked a ball between them for six months in the English Premier League.”
Those worries have been well and truly blown out of the water this season though. Both Defoe and Davis have been critical in the Gers’ success in the league.
Great strength in depth will be needed to maintain their push towards the top of the table, and the title challenge against Celtic. The 2-1 win over their fierce rivals meant that should they win their game in hand, the Light Blues will go back top.
