Rangers have a hero on their hands in Allan McGregor.

The veteran stopper isn’t just great at keeping the ball out of the net, but he is also a fantastic presence to have in a side that are pushing for a first title in nine years.

His calmness and game management are second to none, and the 37-year-old is now at a point in his career whereby he has seen just about everything there is to see in the professional game.

And his cunningness was on full display against Kilmarnock on Boxing Day.

With the score at 1-0 and the Gers looking to hang on for a vital three points after a tough clash against the visitors, McGregor took it upon himself to slow the game right down.

Stood with the ball at his feet, he waited and waited and waited for a Killie player to advance towards him before deciding to pick it up at the very last second.

Some would call that time wasting, others might call it gamesmanship, but for the Ibrox faithful, it was a delight.

If Rangers are to push Celtic all the way in this title race, then they’re going to need every ounce of wiliness and smarts that they can muster.

McGregor showed that he had that in his locker on Boxing Day, and as long as he and his teammates can toe the line and avoid a rap on the knuckles, then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a little bit of dramatic game management.
