Ibrox View: Pundit verdict surely shows Rangers loanee must cut losses as chances dwindle

If Rangers fans need any proof of just how successful the right kind of loan spell can be then they don’t have very far to look at all.

Ryan Kent was a runaway success last season after joining on a temporary deal from Liverpool, so much so that he was awarded the PFA’s Young Player of the Year.

In fact, he was so good that the Gers were convinced to make a permanent move for him, picking him up in a £7 million swoop over the summer.

And Steven Gerrard must have been hoping for a repeat performance when he brought in Sheyi Ojo form his former club this time around.

The winger started the season brightly, and was a regular in the Light Blues’ starting XI, but has fallen out of favour a little in more recent times, and hasn’t started a league match since the end of October.

But even taking that drop-off into consideration, Darren Bent is of the opinion that Ojo should look to make his loan to Ibrox permanent.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “When you keep going on loan, it can upset you a bit as you can never settle, as you’re always thinking ‘Where will I be next season?’

“And I think it won’t do you any favours, so I think at some stage Ojo is going to have to leave Liverpool, go somewhere, it might be the Championship, it might be Scottish football, sign permanently and make a career from there.

“Sign for someone permanently on a four-year deal and get yourself right, he can’t be settling anywhere, when it’s loan-loan-loan all the time.”

From the player’s perspective, it’s hard to disagree with Bent too much. After all, at 22, Ojo is at a point in his career when he needs to be playing first team football as regularly as popular.

He’s not going to get those at Liverpool.

But from Rangers’ point of view, is Ojo on the same sort of level that Kent was last year?

The honest answer is probably not, and that’s being reflected in his lack of starts at the moment.

He still has time to turn things around, but it could be that he has to look elsewhere to get his career kick-started.
