When it comes to losing young talent, Rangers have been stung before.

Let’s not forget that we saw Billy Gilmour, a potential Ibrox hero-in-waiting, walk away from the club to join Chelsea not too long ago, and the last thing Steven Gerrard will want are any repeats of that debacle.

So no doubt Gers everywhere will be delighted to hear that defensive starlet Nathan Patterson has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Ibrox until 2022 at least, as per the club themselves.

The 18-year-old has been a regular for the reserves this term, and by all accounts, he has the potential to be a firm favourite for the seniors if and when he makes his breakthrough.

Because of that, tying him down feels like a really positive move from the club.

Success isn’t just about lifting trophies, it’s about building legacies and reinforcing the infrastructures that have served this footballing colossus so well for so long, and by bringing through players of Patterson’s ilk and getting them to commit their future to Ibrox, that should hopefully be made a whole lot easier.

In the meantime, there are a fair few Light Blues who are over the moon with Saturday’s announcement…
